What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is the practice of optimizing content specifically to be cited, referenced, or summarized by generative AI tools like chatbots and AI search assistants, rather than aiming for a ranked position on a traditional results page.

GEO vs. AEO vs. SEO

The three disciplines get lumped together, but they aren’t identical. SEO optimizes for ranking position. AEO optimizes for being picked as a direct answer, including inside traditional search features. GEO is narrower still: it’s specifically about being cited or summarized by generative AI systems like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. A page can be well optimized for one and still fail at the other.

Example

A brand might structure its product comparison page with clear, well-organized facts, figures, and named entities specifically so that an AI assistant answering “what’s the best option for X” is more likely to reference and cite that page rather than pull from a competitor’s less structured content.

Why It Matters

As more people get answers directly from AI chat tools rather than clicking through search results, roughly 68% of Google searches now end with no click at all, GEO addresses a growing visibility channel that traditional keyword-focused SEO doesn’t fully cover on its own. Citation patterns are also shifting fast: YouTube became the single most-cited domain in AI Overviews as of early 2026, which shows generative engines pulling from a far wider mix of formats than a text-only SEO strategy accounts for. This is closely tied to LLM citation tracking, since a mention inside a chatbot response counts differently than a traditional click.
