SEO Audit Checklist Before You Renew
Before you sign another month of your SEO retainer, run this checklist yourself. It takes an hour and tells you more than any report your agency will send.

Most businesses renew their SEO retainer on autopilot. The invoice comes in, nothing seems obviously broken, so it gets paid. That’s a reasonable way to handle a subscription. It’s not a reasonable way to handle a few thousand dollars a month going toward a strategy you can’t independently verify.
Before your next renewal, run this checklist yourself. Every item takes minutes if you have the access you should already have. If you don’t have the access, that’s item zero.
0. Confirm you actually have access
Log into Google Search Console and GA4 yourself, with your own admin credentials, not a shared login controlled by the agency. If you can’t do this in the next five minutes, stop here. Nothing else on this list matters until you have direct access to your own data.
1. Pull the 6-month organic traffic trend
In Search Console, look at total clicks and impressions over the last six months. You’re not looking for a perfectly smooth line. You’re looking for direction. Flat over six months of active, paid engagement is a yellow flag. Down is a red one. If it’s up, check the next item before you celebrate.
2. Check branded vs non-branded query split
In Search Console’s performance report, filter queries containing your brand name versus everything else. If nearly all your traffic growth is branded (people already searching your company name), that’s not new SEO-driven demand. That’s people who already knew you, finding you. Real SEO progress shows up in non-branded, service or product-related query growth.
3. Sort ranked keywords by search volume
Pull the list of keywords you rank for and sort by monthly search volume, not position. It’s common for a report to celebrate “40 keywords in the top 10” without mentioning that most of them get single-digit monthly searches. A handful of rankings on genuinely searched, commercially relevant terms matters more than dozens on terms nobody types.
4. Run a Core Web Vitals check
Search Console has a Core Web Vitals report built in, or you can run PageSpeed Insights on a few key pages for free. Slow load times and layout shifts directly affect rankings and conversions. If nobody’s mentioned this in your reports and the numbers are bad, technical SEO has been neglected, however good the content reports look.
5. Check indexation health
In Search Console’s Pages report, look at how many URLs are “Indexed” versus stuck in “Discovered, not indexed” or “Crawled, not indexed.” A large and growing pile of unindexed pages usually points to thin content, duplicate content, or a technical crawl issue nobody’s addressed.
6. Spot-check the backlink profile
You don’t need an expensive tool for a basic check. Search Console’s Links report shows your top linking sites for free. Skim the list. If you see domains with no obvious relevance to your industry, or a pattern of links from clearly low-quality directory or blog network sites, that’s worth a direct conversation with your agency about where those came from.
7. Match traffic to actual leads or sales
Pull up your CRM or contact form submissions and look at how many came from organic search over the same six-month window, using GA4’s channel attribution. This is the step most businesses skip, and it’s the one that actually answers whether the retainer is worth the invoice. Traffic and rankings are proxies. This is the outcome.
8. Compare the report against the retainer scope
Pull out your original contract or proposal and check what was promised: how many pieces of content per month, how many links, what technical work. Compare that against what’s actually shown up in reports over the same period. A gap between promised scope and delivered scope is the most direct way to catch an account that’s being under-serviced.
What to do with what you find
None of this requires SEO expertise, just an hour and your own logins. If most of these come back clean, that’s genuinely useful confirmation your retainer is earning its keep. If two or three come back concerning, that’s a conversation to have before you renew, not after another quarter of the same. And if you want an even faster first pass, our free Traffic Analyzer tool pulls several of these signals from your own Search Console data in under a minute.
