What Is Content Decay?
Content decay is the gradual decline in a page’s organic traffic and rankings over time, often because the information has become outdated or competitors have published stronger content.
Example
A “Best Marketing Tools of 2023” article that once drove steady traffic might see rankings and clicks steadily drop through 2025 as the tools listed become outdated and newer comparison articles take its place.
Why it matters
Regularly identifying and refreshing decaying content, updating facts, examples, and formatting, is often far more efficient than creating new content from scratch, since the page already has some existing authority and backlinks.
