What Is a Backlink?

A backlink is a link from another site pointing to yours, treated as a trust signal. How they're evaluated, and a real example.

A backlink is a link from another website pointing to yours. Search engines treat backlinks as a signal of trust and relevance, since another site is effectively vouching for your content by linking to it.

Why backlinks matter

Backlinks remain one of the strongest ranking signals Google has publicly acknowledged, but quality matters far more than quantity, one link from a genuinely relevant, authoritative site outweighs dozens from low-quality or unrelated ones. Chasing raw link volume without regard for relevance or quality is how sites end up with a large but weak, or actively penalized, link profile. The right question isn’t “how many backlinks do I have,” it’s “would a real editor at a relevant site have linked here anyway, without being asked or paid.”

How backlinks are evaluated

  1. Relevance. A link from a topically related site carries more weight than one from an unrelated domain.
  2. Authority of the linking domain. Links from established, trusted sites pass more value than links from new or low-quality domains.
  3. Link attribute. A standard dofollow link passes ranking signal; a nofollow, sponsored, or UGC-tagged link tells search engines to treat it differently, though Google has said it may still consider these as hints.
  4. Anchor text and placement. A contextual, in-content link with descriptive anchor text carries more weight than a link buried in a footer or sidebar.
  5. Naturalness of the overall pattern. A link profile that looks organically earned over time is judged more favorably than one with sudden, unnatural spikes.

Ways to earn backlinks

  • Publish original data or research. Genuinely new information attracts natural citations far more reliably than opinion content.
  • Digital PR. Pitching a newsworthy story, data set, or angle to journalists and publishers earns editorial links.
  • Broken link building. Finding dead links on relevant sites and suggesting your working content as a replacement.
  • Guest posting on genuinely relevant sites. Still viable when done for real audience value, not as a link-buying scheme in disguise.
  • Avoid PBNs and paid link schemes. These violate Google’s guidelines directly and risk a manual action that can be far more costly than slower, legitimate link building.

Real example

For example, if a well-known industry publication writes an article and links to your company’s original research page, that’s a backlink, likely dofollow, from a relevant, authoritative domain, exactly the kind of link that meaningfully moves both rankings and Domain Authority.

Backlinks and AI search

Backlinks continue to matter for traditional ranking, but AI Overviews and chatbot citation systems appear to weigh a broader set of authority signals, including brand mentions without a link at all, sometimes called co-citation or unlinked mentions. This means a strong backlink profile still helps overall site authority and topical credibility, but it’s no longer the only path to being recognized as a trusted source by AI-driven systems, brand visibility across the web now matters somewhat independently of link equity.

FAQ

Do nofollow links help SEO at all?

Google has said it may use nofollow links as a hint for crawling and ranking, even though they don’t guarantee passed ranking value the way dofollow links do. They can also drive direct referral traffic and brand visibility regardless.

How many backlinks do I need to rank?

There’s no fixed number, it depends entirely on the competitiveness of the keyword and what your competitors already have. Check the actual backlink profiles of pages currently ranking for your target term instead of chasing an arbitrary count.

Can too many backlinks hurt my site?

Not the quantity itself, but a sudden, unnatural spike in low-quality or clearly manipulative links can trigger a manual action or algorithmic devaluation.

Should I disavow bad backlinks?

Google generally ignores most low-quality links automatically. Disavowing is typically only necessary if you’ve received a manual action or strongly suspect a targeted negative SEO attack.

One relevant link beats fifty irrelevant ones, every time. If you’re counting backlinks instead of evaluating them, you’re tracking the wrong number.
